The Suburbs and the City
3 December 2007Living in New York City, Boston and Jerusalem over the past 20 years has influenced the way I view the world and how I work. Commuting from Queens into Manhattan was annoying since I was in a 2 fare zone and it took me over and hour to get to work. When I moved in the Old City of Jerusalem and worked in Yemin Moshe, the walk down the hill and up the hill was gratifying and exhillirating. Back in NYC when I started my company out of my bedroom, there was no commute. In Boston I drove 15 minutes from Cambridge to Lexington daily. The bus from Jerusalem to Tel Aviv at 5am wasn’t so bad since I was sleeping. And then when I was on the Upper West Side and needed to get to my midtown office here on 40th Street, the commute was only 12 minutes.
So basically I have had the positives and negatives of living and working in the city and commuting from bed to couch to desk to bus to train to bike (I used to bike to work also) to the old fashioned gas-guzzling car.
Yesterday I was in Stamford CT and took the Metro North down into Manhattan on the Express. 45 minutes. The bus to Teaneck then took 25 minutes. This morning it took over an hour and a half though from door to door due to icy roads, buses and traffic.
I have some friends who commute from Philadelphia into New York City daily and that takes over 2 hours.
